SHC Probes Sharea Faisal Tree Cutting
SHC Questions Timber Sale, Summons Parks Director Over Karachi Tree Cutting
Karachi – The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday took a closer look at the large-scale felling of trees along the city’s main artery, Sharea Faisal.
A division bench hearing a petition against the tree cutting asked the prosecution to provide detailed figures on how many trees have been cut over the years, and to clarify where and to whom the timber was sold. The court also inquired whether any auctions had been held for the timber, directing the submission of a proper report.
During the hearing, the Sindh government’s counsel said that new trees were being planted to replace those that had been cut. However, the court pressed for more specific information on the timber from previously felled trees, including details on sales and pricing.
In a significant move, the SHC summoned the Director General of Parks to appear in person at the next hearing, scheduled for October 20.
Earlier, the Sindh government and the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) had filed a reply in the court regarding the petition. The bench had previously restrained authorities from cutting trees along Sharea Faisal and asked the SEPA Director General and other officials to submit a comprehensive report.
The petition, filed by a citizen, accuses the authorities of violating environmental laws and judicial directives. The Chief Secretary of Sindh, the Secretary of Local Government, and the Secretary Forest Department have been named as respondents in the case.
