SHC Suspends Justice Jahangiri from Judicial Duties Pending SJC Decision

Karachi: A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC), headed by Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan, has ordered that Justice Jahangiri be barred from performing any judicial work until the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) issues its final decision.

The bench also appointed senior lawyers Barrister Zafarullah Khan and Ashtar Ali Ausaf as amici curiae to assist with the proceedings. The Attorney General has been asked to provide input on the maintainability of the petition.

A written order released after today’s hearing formally confirms the suspension of Justice Jahangiri’s judicial responsibilities until further notice.

The controversy first emerged in July when a letter allegedly from the Karachi University (KU) Controller of Examinations began circulating on social media concerning Justice Jahangiri’s law degree. The matter escalated after the KU syndicate revoked both his degree and enrollment. Jahangiri had earned his LLB in 1991 under enrollment number 5968.

The decision followed the brief detention of Dr. Riaz Ahmed, an academic and KU syndicate member, who was reportedly taken into custody to prevent him from attending the crucial syndicate meeting. Dr. Ahmed was released later in the day after the syndicate moved to cancel Justice Jahangiri’s degree.
