GILGIT – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Gilgit-Baltistan and gave compensation cheques to families affected by recent floods and heavy rains.
At a special event, PM Shehbaz said that each family that lost a loved one will get Rs1 million, while injured people will receive Rs500,000. He asked the GB government to also help with relief efforts.
The Prime Minister told officials to quickly fix damaged roads, buildings, and development projects. He said the federal government will continue to support GB until everything is fully restored.
PM Shehbaz warned about the danger of climate change and said Pakistan is one of the top 10 countries most at risk. He said, “If we don’t prepare on time, we won’t be able to handle the disaster.”
He promised to keep visiting GB until the people are fully supported and safe again. He said the monsoon rains and cloudbursts caused big damage, and many lives were lost.
To help with electricity problems in winter, PM Shehbaz also announced a 100-megawatt solar power project. He laid the foundation stone for a new Danish School to help poor children in the region.
The Prime Minister was upset that an early warning system, planned 7 years ago, is still not working. He said it must be started now to protect people in time.
Lastly, he said the Ministry of Communications is working to fix roads and promised long-term support and development for Gilgit-Baltistan.
