Sugar Prices Soar in Pakistan Amid Ramadan Inflation
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the price hike of Rs. 14.22 per kilogram has put an additional burden on consumers, during the holy month of Ramadan.
The cities most affected by this price surge are Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Karachi, where sugar prices have reached Rs. 180 per kilogram. Other cities, such as Quetta, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Peshawar, are also witnessing high sugar prices, ranging from Rs. 175 to Rs. 176 per kilogram.
Sources revealed that the country’s sugar reserves are expected to last until October 2025, with 56 million tons of sugarcane crushed and 53 lakh tons of sugar produced by February.
The government has exported 741,000 metric tons of sugar and has 4-5 lakh tons of sugar reserves with sugar mills.
Pakistan’s inflation rise in the second week of Ramadan
Yesterday PBS report stated that the weekly inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), increased by 0.22 percent for the combined consumption groups during the week ended on March 13.
According to the PBS data, the SPI for the week under review in the above-mentioned group was recorded at 320.75 points as compared to 320.04 points during the past week.
As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined consumption group in the week under review witnessed an increase of 0.22 per cent.
