Swat River Tragedy PHC Orders Full Probe After 17 Deaths
Court Demands Full Investigation into Swat River Tragedy
The court said the person who filed the case blamed the government for what happened.
According to the court’s written order, a special team has already been made to look into the incident.
The head of this investigation team came to court and promised they would do a full and honest investigation and send a report soon.
The High Court told the team to be fair and not show any bias. The team must send their report within 14 days.
Earlier Hearing Details:
In an earlier court hearing, Chief Justice SM Atiq Shah and Justice Faheem Wali of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) called several top government officers, including those from Malakand, Hazara, Kohat, and Dera Ismail Khan, to come to court in person.
The court was very upset that no one quickly helped tourists when the water level in the Swat River suddenly rose.
“Seventeen people died because of carelessness,” the Chief Justice said. “Why weren’t the tourists saved on time? Why weren’t life jackets dropped using drones?”
During the hearing, the Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa told the court that an operation to remove illegal buildings near the river has started.
He also said that although an air ambulance was ready, it couldn’t be used because there wasn’t enough time.
The Irrigation Department gave a report saying that the water level in the river rose very fast within a few hours. They also said they had warned the concerned departments earlier.
But Chief Justice Atiq Shah criticized the authorities for not reacting properly to those warnings.
The court told the officials to give a full report about the incident and said the hearing will continue on Thursday.
