Four U.S. Army ‘Night Stalkers’ Killed in Black Hawk Crash Near Tacoma

Tacoma, Washington — A U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter went down Wednesday night near a base about 15 miles southeast of Tacoma, leaving no survivors among the four crew members on board, officials confirmed.

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk crashed around 9 p.m. PDT in rugged terrain, according to Jacqui Hill, spokesperson for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

All four personnel were members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, 4th Battalion, based at Lewis-McChord. Known as the “Night Stalkers,” this elite unit specializes in nighttime operations and has been at the forefront of the Army’s night-flying tactics.

“They were elite warriors who embodied our highest values of the Army and Army Special Operations, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Lieutenant General Jonathan Braga said in a statement honoring the fallen soldiers.

Hill said recovery efforts were slowed by the remote location, thick vegetation, and fires caused by the crash. Search and recovery operations were ongoing as of Friday. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
