Tarar Backs Suspension of 26 Punjab Assembly Members

Tarar Explains Suspension of 26 Assembly Members

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar spoke to the media about the recent suspension of 26 members of the Punjab Assembly. He explained that the Speaker of the Assembly has the legal right to suspend any member who breaks their oath, according to the Constitution.

Tarar said that all assembly members must follow the Constitution because they took an oath to do so. He also mentioned that the Speaker can send cases of possible disqualification to the Chief Election Commissioner, who can take further action.

Tarar added that the Speaker must act responsibly as the leader of the House and make fair decisions that follow democratic rules.

He also said that the Speaker would remain neutral, even if government members misbehave. While Tarar agreed that the opposition has the right to protest, he strongly criticized actions like breaking chairs or pulling out microphones, saying these are not proper ways to protest.

Punjab Assembly Speaker suspends 26 opposition members

Tarar said the law should be followed in dealing with such behavior. He was hopeful that the Speaker would act fairly and solve the issue in a way that respects democracy.

Earlier in the day, the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly went to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to file formal complaints to disqualify the 26 members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), which is backed by PTI.

This happened because, on June 27, 2025, these opposition members allegedly caused a disturbance and damaged property during an assembly session. In response, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan suspended them.

On June 28, the Speaker announced he would refer their case to the ECP for possible disqualification.

The suspended members include:
Malik Fahad Masood, Muhammad Tanvir Aslam, Syed Riffat Mehmood, Yasir Mehmood Qureshi, Kalimullah Khan, Muhammad Ansar Iqbal, Ali Asif, Zulfiqar Ali, Ahmed Mujtaba Chaudhry, Shahid Javed, Muhammad Ismail, Khayal Ahmed, Shehbaz Ahmed, Tayyab Rashid, Imtiaz Mehmood, Ali Imtiaz, Rashid Tufail, Murtaza Iqbal, Khalid Zubair, Ijaz Shafi, Saima Kanwal, Muhammad Naeem, Sajjad Ahmed, Rana Aurangzeb, Shoaib Mir, and Usama Asghar Ali Gujjar.
