PKR Shows Mixed Performance; USD Climbs to PKR 287.30 in Open Market

KARACHI – July 16, 2025: The Pakistani Rupee (PKR) exhibited a mixed trend in currency markets on Tuesday, with the US Dollar (USD) quoted at PKR 285.10 for buying and PKR 287.30 for selling in the open market, according to exchange companies.

Against other major global currencies, the PKR fluctuated:

Euro (EUR): Declined by 76.50 paisa (0.22%) to close at PKR 341.00

British Pound (GBP): Gained 65 paisa (0.17%) to settle at PKR 381.50

Swiss Franc (CHF): Dropped by 35.20 paisa (0.10%) to PKR 361.65

Japanese Yen (JPY): Marginally appreciated by 0.01 paisa (0.01%) to PKR 1.9715

Chinese Yuan (CNY): Fell by 2.50 paisa (0.06%) to PKR 39.80

In the money market, the 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid Rate (KIBOR) and Offer Rate remained steady with a slight dip of 1 basis point, settling at 10.72% and 10.97%, respectively.

So far this calendar year, the PKR has depreciated by Rs 6.14 or 2.15%. For the current fiscal year, the currency has declined by 10.80 paisa or 0.04%, reflecting continued economic pressure.

Economic Implications
The rising dollar rate poses growing challenges for Pakistan’s economy. A weaker PKR drives up the cost of importing critical goods like fuel and food, worsening inflation and squeezing household budgets. Businesses face higher input costs, which may lead to product price hikes or job cuts.

Furthermore, remittances sent by overseas Pakistanis lose value in real terms, impacting millions of families. The government also faces a heavier burden in repaying foreign loans, tightening its fiscal space.

Currency Background
The US Dollar (USD), recognized as the global reserve currency, plays a crucial role in international trade and finance. The Pakistani Rupee (PKR), regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan, reflects both domestic macroeconomic trends and market dynamics.
