Uttarakhand Flood 60 Missing After Deadly Cloudburst

Uttarakhand Flood 60 Missing After Deadly Cloudburst

UTTARAKHAND – A strong flood hit the mountain town of Dharali after heavy rain caused a sudden “cloudburst” on Tuesday. At least four people died, and over 60 people — including 11 soldiers — are still missing, according to rescue teams.

The flood brought fast-moving water, mud, and rocks down the valley. Many houses and buildings were destroyed in just seconds. Videos showed muddy water sweeping away large buildings.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said search and rescue teams are still working. “The search for the missing is ongoing,” said Mohsen Shahedi from the NDRF.

Rescue helicopters are bringing food and supplies to people stuck in the area. But bad weather and fog are making flights difficult.

What Happened?
Officials say the flood happened after 270 millimeters (10 inches) of rain fell in just one day, which experts call an “extreme event.” Many areas are now buried under 15 meters of mud. Some buildings were completely covered.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the rescue mission is happening at full speed. “We are working like in a war,” he said.

Rising Danger
All major rivers in the state are now above danger levels. People living near rivers have been moved to safer places on higher ground.

A local man, Suman Semwal, said the flood came with a loud noise and hit the town in just 15 seconds. “People didn’t even understand what was happening,” he said.

Climate Change Warning
Experts say this disaster is a “wake-up call” about the effects of climate change. Such heavy rains and sudden floods are becoming more common in mountain areas due to global warming.

Hydrologist Manish Shrestha said intense rainfall like this has a stronger impact in the mountains than in flat areas. “This is linked to climate change,” he said.

Conclusion
The flood in Uttarakhand shows how deadly and fast climate disasters can be. Rescue work continues as teams search for the missing and help survivors.
