Von der Leyen Europe Must Defend Itself
Von der Leyen Urges Europe to Defend Its Independence Amid Russian Threats
Strasbourg – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on Europe to assert its independence and strengthen its defenses in the face of growing global tensions. Speaking to the European Parliament, she said the continent must be prepared to defend its interests in a world where many major powers are either ambivalent or openly hostile to Europe.
“Battlelines for a new world order based on power are being drawn right now. Europe must fight for its place in this world,” von der Leyen said. “This must be Europe’s independence moment.”
She stressed the importance of safeguarding Europe’s eastern flank, which stretches from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, and urged increased investments in strategic military capabilities. “Europe’s eastern flank keeps all of Europe safe. This is why we must invest in supporting it. Europe will defend every inch of its territory,” she said.
Von der Leyen also condemned a recent violation of Polish airspace, describing it as “reckless and unprecedented.” She reported that over 10 Russian Shahid drones had entered Polish airspace, emphasizing Europe’s support for Poland.
“Europe stands in full solidarity with Poland,” she told lawmakers.
