Winter Relief Special Electricity Tariff
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has given the green light to a special winter relief package aimed at supporting domestic and industrial electricity users. The package, which spans three months, is designed to encourage greater electricity use while reducing the burden on gas supplies.
Chaired by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, the ECC meeting focused on proposals from the Ministry of Energy (Power Division). The meeting was attended by key government officials, including Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, and other federal representatives, both in-person and virtually.
The initiative introduces a special electricity tariff of Rs. 26.07 per kWh for consumers who use electricity beyond a set benchmark. This tariff applies to domestic consumers using more than 200 units per month, as well as industrial, commercial, and general service users.
The relief program, set to run from December 2024 to February 2024, is expected to ease the load on gas supplies by shifting demand to electricity. To determine eligibility, the government will calculate benchmark consumption based on either the user’s current usage or an average of the past three years’ consumption during the same months—whichever is higher.
Officials believe the package will maximize the use of electricity generation systems and provide financial relief to a significant portion of the population. The ECC emphasized that the terms and conditions for the initiative will ensure fairness and efficiency in its implementation.
This move comes as part of broader efforts to manage energy resources effectively during peak winter months.
