Yemen Coast Guard to Get Training, Funding to Counter Piracy and Smuggling

Riyadh – Yemen’s internationally recognised government will see its coastguard strengthened under a new agreement announced in Riyadh, aimed at tackling piracy, human trafficking, and smuggling along its waters.

The initiative, backed by more than 35 countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, the United States, Gulf nations, and the European Union, is worth several million dollars, according to the British embassy. Saudi Arabia alone pledged $4 million, its ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, confirmed.

Japan’s envoy to Yemen, Yoichi Nakashima, highlighted the importance of the Yemeni government asserting control over its coastline. However, he cautioned that this move may not immediately reduce attacks from the Iran-backed Houthis, who continue to fire missiles and drones at Israel and Red Sea shipping in support of Palestinians during the Gaza conflict.

“This is a first step, to be followed by others,” Nakashima said.
