Pakistan announced on Monday that 1,100 of its citizens incarcerated in Saudi Arabia will release Pakistani detainees shortly, following agreements signed with Riyadh on the release of detainees during Prime Minister Imran Khan‘s weekend visit to the Kingdom.

Pakistan’s interior minister, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, told the media in Islamabad that Saudi Arabia was also able to accept the return of Pakistanis jailed for serious offenses. Even though many of the prisoners had already completed a significant portion of their sentence.

The minister said that with Rs 1 billion in assistance, hundreds of more prisoners who would pay minor fines will be freed from Saudi jails. “The trials of those accused of violent offenses will be dealt with separately,” he added. Noting that the whole process of prisoner return has been concluded.

According to the minister, at least 30 Pakistanis jailed for murder and drug offenses will not release. However, they had sentenced to death.

During PM Khan’s three-day visit to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia reached an agreement on the release of convicted prisoners. The two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding on the formation of the Saudi-Pakistan Supreme Coordination Council (SPSCC). It will deal with criminals and violence.

The two countries have both agreed to work together to fight drug trafficking. Also, to fund oil, housing, transportation, water, and communications programs.

As part of a deal with the Imran Khan administration, the Saudi government freed 2,080 Pakistani prisoners last year. These inmates had convicted of forgery, robbery, extortion, and unlawful border entry.
