Definition of Pedagogical Skills
Pedagogical skills are teaching skills. These are certain capabilities and expertise that teachers need to teach students and help them learn. These skills ensure that the teaching process is done effectively and efficiently.
For instance, prospective drivers need to attain a driver’s license before they can drive on public roads. Similarly, prospective teachers need to have a certain competency before they can teach in a classroom. Not every person is a teacher. Therefore, teachers have certain qualities which allows learners to form a bond with them and learn from them. To become a teacher, one must have pedagogical skills.
Importance of Pedagogical Skills
Pedagogical skills are important for a multitude of reasons. Some are included below:
1.IMPROVEMENT OF QUALITY
Pedagogical skills are important for teachers because it enhances the quality of the teaching process. If a teacher knows the psychology of her students, their needs, and interests, she can adopt a suitable teaching style that matches their learning requirements. This improves the teaching and learning experience.
2.PROMOTES DEEPER LEARNING
A teacher needs to know her students well. In order to promote deeper learning, she needs to understand which students can go the extra mile and which need to be given a little push. If she has the necessary skills, she will be able to create a deeper learning experience.
3.FORMATION OF A POSITIVE CLASSROOM
A teacher uses her communication skills, classroom discipline techniques and student interaction skills to formulate a positive classroom for the students. This positive classroom is a safe environment for the students. They do not feel judged if they perform badly nor if they make a mistake. They become eager to learn and are unafraid of taking risks and committing errors.
4.HIGHER LEVEL OF STUDENT PARTICIPATION
When the learners see that their teacher is molding herself according to their standards, interests, personalities and requirements, then the students work harder and participate more. They interact with the teacher rather than just adopt a boring passive role. They become excited to learn and try to improve communication and interaction.
5.DEVLEOPS LEARNER’S SKILLS
Imitation is the most natural thing a human does from birth till death. Seeing the teacher flaunt her social, leaderships, disciplinary and communication skills induces the students to do the same. The students not just the content of the course but also other things from the teacher i.e. vocabulary and problem-solving attitudes. Therefore, pedagogical skills are important to help develop learner’s skills and prepare them for the real world. These can also prepare prospective teachers and encourage students to adopt pedagogy as a profession.

Currently, I am a student of Fatima Jinnah Women University. With a burning passion for psychology, words, and dreams, I decided to abandon medical studies for humanities. These days, when I’m not listening to ballads, watching movies, or sitting down with a good novel, I am rigorously studying Hangul (Korean language) to satisfy my obsession for BTS and K dramas. I’m a thinking introvert and INFJ personality. Therefore, I like ‘me time’. My articles typically resonate with psychological well-being advice.
