Trump Criticizes Japan Over Trade Threatens Higher Tariffs
While flying on Air Force One, Donald Trump talked to reporters and criticized Japan. He said Japan doesn’t buy enough American rice, and there is an unfair trade situation when it comes to cars between the two countries.
Trump said, “I don’t think we’ll make a deal with Japan. They are very tough.”
Back in April, Trump added a 10% tax (called a tariff) on imports from many countries. He also suggested higher taxes for dozens of other countries, but delayed them to give time for negotiations.
That delay ends on July 9. If no deals are made, those higher taxes will start next week.
So far, the U.S. has only made two deals:
One general agreement with the United Kingdom
One temporary deal with China to reduce tariffs
Trump said he plans to send Japan a letter asking them to pay 30% or 35% or whatever the U.S. decides, because he thinks the U.S. is losing money in trade with Japan.
“It’s not fair to the American people,” he said.
Japan, even though it is a close U.S. ally and a major investor, still faces the same 10% tax as other countries, and even higher taxes on cars, steel, and aluminum.
Ryosei Akazawa, a Japanese trade official, said last month that Japan and the U.S. had some progress during their fifth round of trade talks, but they still haven’t agreed on a deal.
