Trump Warns Russia to Halt Ukraine Attacks by Friday
WASHINGTON/MOSCOW
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has told Russia to stop its attacks on Ukraine by Friday or face new punishments.
Trump did not say exactly what actions the U.S. would take. But he has said before that he might put extra tariffs (taxes) on countries that still do business with Russia — like China and India. These tariffs would try to stop Russia from making money through trade.
Trump said on Tuesday that he would wait for talks in Moscow before deciding on any penalties.
“We’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters.
Trump’s representative, Howard Witkoff, arrived in Moscow. He was welcomed by Kirill Dmitriev, a top Russian official. It’s not clear if Witkoff will meet President Putin, though he has met him in the past.
Peace Talks Not Working
Russia continues to attack Ukraine, even as the U.S. tries to stop the war.
Three peace talks in Turkey have failed. Russia wants more land and wants Ukraine to stop getting support from Western countries. Ukraine says that it is not acceptable.
President Zelensky of Ukraine wants a full ceasefire and has asked Western countries to support regime change in Moscow.
Trump’s Frustration Grows
Trump is becoming more upset with Putin and Russia’s ongoing war.
When asked what message his team would give to Russia, Trump said,
“Get a deal where people stop getting killed.”
Russia says it values talks with Trump’s team. But President Putin still says he will not change his demands, which include Ukraine giving up four regions and not joining NATO.
Nuclear Warnings
Trump recently said he sent two U.S. submarines to the region after a disagreement with former Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev. He didn’t say if they were nuclear-armed or just nuclear-powered.
Russia replied by asking for “caution”.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said,
“Everyone should be very careful with nuclear threats.”
