Exit 8 Horror Game Movie Lands US Deal with Neon

Psychological Horror Game ‘Exit 8’ Gets Film Adaptation, Picked Up by Neon for U.S. Release

LOS ANGELES — The viral psychological horror game Exit 8, known for its eerie, looping gameplay and surreal underground setting, is officially headed to the big screen. Indie distributor Neon has secured the rights for the film’s North American release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Exit 8 first gained traction in 2023, quickly becoming a hit among gamers for its unsettling atmosphere and unique mechanics. Set in a sterile, never-ending subway corridor, players must observe every detail closely — because spotting even a single anomaly is the only way forward. Miss one, and you’re sent right back to the beginning.

Now, that chilling concept is being reimagined as a feature film. Japanese filmmaker Genki Kawamura, celebrated for his emotionally resonant storytelling, is set to direct. The cast includes prominent Japanese actors Kazunari Ninomiya, Nana Komatsu, and Yamato Kochi.

Kawamura is also co-writing the screenplay with Kentaro Hirase, with the team aiming to preserve the game’s hauntingly minimalist premise and psychological tension. The story will revolve around a man trapped in an endless tunnel, forced to notice subtle differences in his surroundings — or risk resetting his entire journey.

The film made its industry debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with plans to screen at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It’s currently eyeing an early 2026 theatrical release.

Neon’s acquisition aligns with the distributor’s recent push into distinctive, thought-provoking films, following projects like It Was Just an Accident and Arco. The adaptation of Exit 8 joins the growing list of video games successfully transitioning to cinema — but unlike many action-heavy franchises, Exit 8 brings a cerebral, minimalist approach that sets it apart.

With its blend of psychological horror, mystery, and mind-bending visuals, the Exit 8 film could become a sleeper hit, appealing to both devoted gamers and fans of unconventional cinema.
