Zelensky Vows Ukraine Will Never Give Up Its Land Ahead of Trump-Putin Summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made it clear: Ukraine will never surrender its territory to the occupiers. Speaking on social media ahead of a high-stakes summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin next week in Alaska, Zelensky stressed that any peace deal that sidelines Ukraine is doomed to fail.
“Any decisions made against us, or without involving Ukraine, are also decisions against peace. They will achieve nothing,” Zelensky said. He added firmly, “The war cannot be ended without us — without Ukraine.”
While the Ukrainian leader expressed readiness for meaningful negotiations that could lead to peace, he emphasized that any agreement must be a “dignified peace,” without going into specifics.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and forced millions of Ukrainians to flee their homes. Despite three rounds of talks between the two sides this year, progress remains elusive, and the upcoming summit’s potential to move the peace process forward is uncertain.
President Putin has so far refused to agree to a ceasefire and ruled out direct talks with Zelensky — a step the Ukrainian president insists is crucial for any real progress.
On Friday, Trump announced the Alaska summit set for August 15, hinting that “there’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both” Ukraine and Russia, but offered no further details.
This meeting will mark the first time sitting US and Russian presidents have met since Joe Biden and Putin’s Geneva summit in June 2021. Trump and Putin last met face-to-face at the 2019 G20 summit in Japan during Trump’s first term, though they have spoken several times by phone since January.
