Xi Lula Unite to Challenge US Tariffs

Xi, Lula Pledge Unity Against US Tariffs in Hour-Long Call

BEIJING / BRASÍLIA – Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have reaffirmed their commitment to defending the multilateral trading system, positioning their countries in sharp contrast to US President Donald Trump’s escalating tariff measures.

In a phone call lasting about an hour, Xi said China would work with Brazil to “set an example of unity and self-reliance among major countries in the Global South” and to “jointly build a more just world and more sustainable planet,” according to state news agency Xinhua. He urged all nations to unite against “unilateralism and protectionism” — remarks widely seen as aimed at Washington’s trade policies.

A statement from the Brazilian presidency confirmed the discussion covered global issues, including the war in Ukraine and climate change. Both leaders highlighted the importance of the G20 and BRICS in defending multilateralism and agreed to expand cooperation in health, oil and gas, the digital economy, and satellite technology.

The talks follow Lula’s recent indication that he plans to consult with leaders of India and China on forming a coordinated response to US tariffs.
