Strickland Eyes UFC Return vs Chimaev
Sean Strickland Eyes Quick UFC Return After Suspension, Inspired by Chimaev’s Title Win
Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland is eager to get back into the octagon after receiving a suspension and fine for his role in a post-fight brawl at Tuff-N-Uff 145. The American fighter, who was suspended until December 29 and fined $5,000, can cut his ban to just four and a half months by completing an anger management program—a step he has now confirmed he plans to take.
Strickland’s urgency to return appears fueled by Khamzat Chimaev’s recent capture of the UFC middleweight title. The former champion is keen to challenge Chimaev as soon as possible, even though he is not currently the leading contender for the Russian star’s next fight.
Having suffered a loss to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 312, Strickland is aware that the top four contenders are already booked. Nassourdine Imavov is scheduled to fight Caio Borralho at UFC Paris in September, while Reinier de Ridder faces Anthony Hernandez at UFC Vancouver in October.
This leaves an opening for Strickland if the UFC accommodates Chimaev’s preferred quick turnaround for UFC 321 on October 25. With limited options for the new champion, Strickland could step in if he completes his anger management program in time.
Strickland’s determination highlights how Chimaev’s championship win has directly influenced his approach, setting up the potential for a high-stakes middleweight clash later this year.
Chimaev’s Dominance at UFC 319
The motivation comes in the wake of UFC 319, where Khamzat Chimaev delivered a dominant performance against Dricus du Plessis in Chicago. Chimaev won the middleweight championship by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring 50-44 in his favor.
From the opening seconds, Chimaev took control, securing takedowns and dictating the pace of the fight. The stats underscored the one-sided nature of the matchup: Chimaev landed 529 strikes compared to Du Plessis’ 45, completed 12 of 17 takedowns, and maintained ground control for over 21 of the 25 minutes.
For Du Plessis, the fight was a harsh reality check. He spent nearly an entire round on his back—a position he had previously occupied for less than five minutes across his UFC career—highlighting Chimaev’s overwhelming dominance.
