Bonzi Stuns Medvedev at US Open

Chaos and Controversy as Bonzi Stuns Medvedev in US Open Opener

In a thrilling opening-round clash at the US Open, French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi pulled off a dramatic five-set victory over Russian star Daniil Medvedev, winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 0-6, 6-4. This marks Bonzi’s third career win over the former world number one and continues Medvedev’s recent struggles, as he suffers his second straight first-round exit at a Grand Slam.

The match was far from ordinary, with one unforgettable moment coming in the third set. Bonzi was serving at 5-4 with the advantage when his first serve clipped the net. At that precise moment, a photographer inadvertently stepped onto the court, causing an unexpected disruption. The umpire intervened immediately, but the delay left Medvedev visibly frustrated.

“I just wanted to go home,” Medvedev reportedly exclaimed into the microphone, voicing his irritation to the crowd. The audience erupted in boos, and the play was halted for nearly five minutes. Despite the interruption, Bonzi continued his serve but eventually lost the point and the game.

Medvedev regained some momentum, taking the following game to reach 6-5 and eventually dominating the fourth set. Yet Bonzi demonstrated remarkable resilience, rallying to claim the decisive fifth set more than 90 minutes after nearly closing the match earlier.

Frustration boiled over for Medvedev after the defeat, as he smashed his racquet on the bench while the crowd jeered around him. The loss continues a difficult season for the Russian, who has now won only one match across the four Grand Slam events this year, a steep drop from his quarterfinal run at the US Open last fall.

Bonzi will now face Marcos Giron in the second round, carrying momentum from a dramatic and hard-fought opening victory.
