Sabalenka Beats Kudermetova Faces Fernandez

Sabalenka Advances to Third Round After Tough Win Over Kudermetova

NEW YORK – Aryna Sabalenka battled past unseeded Russian Polina Kudermetova to reach the third round of the US Open on Wednesday.

The world number one fought through a tense first set under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights, eventually claiming it in a tiebreak 7-6 (7/4) before cruising to a 6-2 win in the second set.

Sabalenka will now face Canadian 31st seed Leylah Fernandez, marking their first encounter since their semi-final clash at Flushing Meadows four years ago. Fernandez had won that match but fell to Emma Raducanu in the final.

Reflecting on the upcoming rematch, Sabalenka said she prefers not to dwell on past results.

“I think it’s better not to remember too much from that match because I’ve changed a lot since then,” she said. “I faced tough challenges, found myself, and became a better player and person. It’s going to be a completely different match this time. But I do enjoy rematches, so I’m really excited to face her again.”

The 27-year-old is also aiming to become the first woman to successfully defend a US Open title since Serena Williams in 2014.

“I have to focus on myself,” Sabalenka added. “If I bring my game and fight for every point, I’ll have my chances. I try to give my best fight every time.”
