Israeli Supreme Court Orders Proper Meals for Palestinian Prisoners Amid Conflict
JERUSALEM — The Israeli Supreme Court has ruled that Palestinian detainees must be provided with three meals a day, ensuring a minimum standard of nutrition, after complaints that prisoners were being intentionally starved during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The decision follows a petition filed by two Israeli human rights organizations, Gisha and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI). The groups alleged that Palestinian prisoners were being deprived of adequate food, violating basic human rights.
In its ruling, a three-judge panel emphasized that the matter is not about comfort but survival. “We are not speaking here of comfortable living or luxury, but of the basic circumstances of survival as required by law. Let us not share in the ways of our worst enemies,” the court said.
Since the conflict began after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, thousands of Palestinians have been arrested without formal charges. Released prisoners have reported overcrowded conditions, lack of medical care, and severe food shortages.
The ruling marks a rare intervention by the court during wartime, challenging directives by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who had argued that prison conditions should be kept as minimal as possible.
Pakistan Condemns Israel’s Plans to Displace Palestinians
Separately, Pakistan has strongly condemned Israel’s statements about forcibly displacing Palestinians from their land. The Foreign Office described such actions as violations of international law and an attempt to undermine peace and stability in the region.
“Forced displacement and the continued expansion of illegal settlements reflect Israel’s disregard for international human rights and humanitarian law,” the statement added.
