Spain Summons Israeli Envoy Over Netanyahu Claim
Spain Summons Israeli Diplomat Over Controversial Statement by Netanyahu’s Office
Madrid – Spain’s foreign ministry has summoned Israel’s top diplomat in Madrid, Dana Erlich, to formally reject “false and slanderous statements” reportedly issued by the Israeli prime minister’s office, according to a statement released Thursday.
The move came after an X post from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office accused Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of making “genocidal threats.” The remarks referred to Sánchez’s announcement earlier this week of new measures restricting arms and fuel shipments to Israel.
Sánchez defended the measures by noting that Spain does not possess nuclear weapons, aircraft carriers, or significant oil reserves that would allow it to exert direct pressure on Israel to halt actions he described as “genocide.”
Israel has consistently denied that its military operations in Gaza constitute genocide and is currently defending itself in a case before the International Court of Justice in The Hague that makes similar allegations.
The U.S. State Department has also expressed concern over Spain’s restrictions, which limit ships and aircraft delivering weapons or military-grade jet fuel to Israel, and include entry bans on Israel’s national security and finance ministers.
