IHC Halts Justice Jahangiri Preserves Court Footage
IHC Asked to Preserve Footage After Restraining Justice Jahangiri from Duties
Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has been asked to preserve the audio and video recordings of proceedings from Courtroom No. 1 on September 16, 2025, following a controversial order restraining Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri from performing his judicial functions.
The request, submitted to the Registrar of the IHC, was made by Advocate Jehangir Khan Jadoon. He highlighted that the case involving Justice Jahangiri was heard by a Divisional Bench led by Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan.
“Media reports indicate that the Chief Justice had stated during the hearing that no decision would be taken immediately and that all counsels would be heard. Yet, unexpectedly, an order was issued restraining Justice Jahangiri from his duties pending proceedings before the Supreme Judicial Council,” Jadoon said.
He added, “This sudden change between what was stated during the hearing and the subsequent order is a matter of serious concern, particularly for members of the Bar who are officers of the Court.” Jadoon requested that the court preserve the footage and provide a copy of the recordings from the hearing.
The day prior, the IHC had formally restrained Justice Jahangiri from carrying out his judicial responsibilities in response to a petition challenging his appointment. The order was issued by the same bench of Chief Justice Dogar and Justice Azam Khan.
Background
The controversy traces back to July when a letter allegedly from the KU Controller of Examinations began circulating on social media, questioning Justice Jahangiri’s law degree. The issue resurfaced after the KU Syndicate canceled his degree and enrollment, which he obtained in 1991 under enrollment number 5968.
The cancellation came shortly after the brief detention of academic and syndicate member Dr. Riaz Ahmed, who was taken into custody hours before the key meeting—apparently to prevent him from attending. Dr. Ahmed was released later the same evening after the syndicate finalized the decision to cancel the degree.
