Yankees Beat Orioles 7-0
Yankees Blank Orioles, Set Tone Ahead of Friday’s Rematch in Baltimore
BALTIMORE — The New York Yankees opened their series dominantly Thursday night, rolling past the Orioles 7-0 behind a strong all-around performance.
“It’s a good way to start the series,” manager Aaron Boone said after the win.
The Yankees (86-67) have now taken six of their last eight games, thriving when they score early. “Jumping out on top early is big,” Boone added. “You’ve got to be able to win in a lot of different ways in this league.”
For Baltimore (72-81), the loss snapped a three-game winning streak and left the team needing to win its final nine contests just to finish at .500. Interim manager Tony Mansolino shook things up by moving Ryan Mountcastle — usually a first baseman — into the leadoff spot for the first time in his career. Mountcastle, back in the lineup after missing two games with a sore finger, collected one of the Orioles’ three hits off Yankees ace Max Fried.
The series continues Friday night with New York sending right-hander Will Warren (8-7, 4.44 ERA) to the mound. Warren is still searching for his first win in four September starts after giving up six runs in Boston last weekend. He faced Baltimore twice earlier this season, taking one loss while earning a no-decision in the other.
The Orioles will counter with left-hander Trevor Rogers (8-2, 1.43 ERA), who is enjoying a career-best season. Rogers hasn’t recorded a decision in his two September outings, but pitched five scoreless innings last Friday in Toronto. He last faced the Yankees in 2021 while with Miami, holding them to two runs in 3 2/3 innings.
The Yankees’ offense will look to stay hot, led by second baseman Amed Rosario, who delivered a two-run double to spark Thursday’s win. Boone praised Rosario’s consistency, particularly against lefties. “He’s a pro,” Boone said. “He prepares really well, brings great energy, and he’s kind of turned into a lefty killer.”
