Gunman Killed After Deadly Attack on Michigan Church
Grand Blanc Township, Michigan – A 40-year-old man from a nearby town was shot dead by police after opening fire inside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday, authorities confirmed.
Police said the suspect drove his vehicle through the church’s front doors before unleashing gunfire with an assault rifle at worshippers gathered for a service attended by “hundreds of people.”
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said officers believe the attacker also set fire to the church before he was confronted and killed by law enforcement. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the building as emergency crews evacuated the wounded.
At least ten people suffered gunshot wounds. One victim has died, while others remain hospitalized, officials reported. Authorities warned that more victims could be found as the scene is further secured.
“My husband heard people screaming, one lady yelling for help,” a nearby resident told AFP.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the attack on his Truth Social platform, calling it “horrendous” and suggesting it appeared to be “another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”
FBI agents have joined local police in the investigation. “Violence in a place of worship is a cowardly and criminal act,” FBI chief Kash Patel wrote on X, adding that prayers were with the victims and their families.
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed she had been briefed on the tragedy.
The fire inside the church was later extinguished, but investigators said the full extent of the damage and casualties will only become clear after a complete search of the site.
