Europe, Arab Nations Back Trump Peace Plan, Urge Hamas to Respond
Washington — The United States’ latest peace initiative for Gaza is gaining broad international support, with European leaders and key Arab and Muslim-majority nations urging Hamas to accept the deal.
In a joint statement, eight Arab and Muslim countries — including Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Pakistan — welcomed President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the war. They pledged to work “positively and constructively” with Washington and other parties to finalize and implement the plan. The Palestinian Authority also voiced support, praising Trump’s “sincere and determined efforts.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he supported the proposal, while Hamas has so far held back, stating only that it has not formally received the plan. Islamic Jihad, however, dismissed it outright, calling it “a recipe for continued aggression against the Palestinian people.” In Gaza, many residents voiced skepticism, seeing the proposal as a tactic to secure hostage releases without halting the fighting.
European Leaders Step In
France, Spain, Britain, Germany, and Italy joined the chorus of backing for the U.S. proposal. French President Emmanuel Macron said the plan was built on earlier French efforts and demanded that Hamas release all hostages immediately. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez welcomed the move, stressing that only a two-state solution could bring lasting peace.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office called Trump’s proposal a “strong” step toward ending the fighting, freeing hostages, and getting aid into Gaza. Former British leader Tony Blair, named as part of a proposed transitional administration for Gaza, described the plan as “bold and intelligent,” offering both relief for Palestinians and long-term security for Israel.
EU Commission President Antonio Costa urged all sides to “give peace a genuine chance,” while Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul echoed the call, describing the proposal as a “unique opportunity” to stop the war.
With growing global momentum behind the U.S. plan, attention now turns to Hamas, whose decision could determine whether the conflict in Gaza moves toward peace or deeper stalemate.
