Earthquake Jolts Malir, Tremors Felt Across Northern Pakistan
Islamabad – Residents of Malir and surrounding areas were startled on Tuesday morning as a moderate earthquake struck the region. According to the Seismological Centre, the tremor hit at 9:34 a.m., registering a magnitude of 3.2 at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicentre located 7 kilometers northwest of Malir.
Anjum Nazir, Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, noted that earthquakes of this size are fairly common and often go unnoticed. “However, this one was felt more strongly because it exceeded a magnitude of 3,” he explained.
The tremors were felt across several cities in northern Pakistan, including Peshawar, Abbottabad, Malakand, Mardan, Hangu, Nowshera, Battagram, Swat, Bajaur, Mohmand, Buner, Attock, Mianwali, and Gujranwala.
This recent activity follows a series of earthquakes earlier in September, which affected Islamabad, parts of Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Experts from the National Seismic Monitoring Centre say the tremors originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, at a depth of 111 kilometers.
Geologists warn that such activity is expected due to Pakistan’s position near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, making the region prone to ongoing seismic movements.
