AB de Villiers Slams Asia Cup Trophy Row Praises India
AB de Villiers Criticizes Trophy Controversy, Urges Focus on Cricket
Former South African captain AB de Villiers has voiced disappointment over the trophy presentation at the Asia Cup 2025, where India appeared reluctant to receive the title from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi.
Speaking on his social media program, De Villiers said the moment left an uncomfortable impression. “It was upsetting to see what unfolded. I don’t think this has anything to do with the game itself, but it left a very bad impression. I hope the matter is resolved soon,” he remarked.
The ex-Proteas star emphasized that politics and sports should not mix. “Sport is a different world, and its celebrations should be enjoyed for what they are,” he said, adding that such incidents put both the game and its players in a difficult position.
The Asia Cup 2025 was overshadowed by strained India-Pakistan ties, with social media highlighting the lack of handshakes or gestures of respect during the tournament. Despite the controversy, India went on to lift the trophy unbeaten.
De Villiers, however, praised India’s on-field performance, particularly with the T20 World Cup approaching. “India is looking really strong. They have a lot of talent, and they play the big moments well. Building up to the World Cup, it’s fantastic to watch,” he said.
