It is a praise to be compared to Ryan Gosling: Ali Rehman

Pakistani actor Ali Rehman Khan recently opened up to Independent Urdu in a frank interview, discussing his most recent performance in the Eid family hit film Daghabaaz Dil, which was directed by Wajahat Rauf and starred Mehwish Hayat.

Ali plays a character in the movie who is anything but dishonest, despite what the title would imply. “In the movie, I play a straightforward, family-oriented man. “For him, having his family together is the most important thing,” Ali said. “He puts others before himself more often than not. He wants everything he does to help others, and he is not in the slightest bit selfish.

The actor went on to say that his character is unselfish and adores his family, particularly his grandmother who reared him and had a close maternal attachment that shapes his behavior in the film. He is close to his grandma, who has reared him essentially since he was a youngster, even though he loves his family. Thus, he and she have a strong mother attachment. He attempts to act justly and morally in everything.

In response to any misunderstandings that could arise from the title of the movie, Ali made it clear that he is not the one who is lying to Mehwish’s character. “No, I can assure you that I am not the one tricking her in the movie. I won’t give away any plot details, but I will mention that the scenario is misleading on its own.

“The movie’s plot is false in and of itself. It is more figurative than literal. Without giving anything away in the form of spoilers, he remarked, “There are many elements in the story where you can see the daghabaazi.”

When asked why he choose this project, the 34-year-old said that the allure of the intriguing screenplay with its unexpected components, together with the fact that he was finally going to work with Mehwish, were what made him decide to take on the part. “Mehwish and I had been discussing for a while that we need to work on a project together. He revealed a long-standing desire to work with the Ms. Marvel actress, saying, “I was very happy to hear that Mehwish is involved in this project.”

But in the end, he decided to say yes based mostly on the screenplay. “I thought the script was great. The twists and turns and the wow factor were incredibly enjoyable to me, said Ali. The actor bemoaned the limited breadth of heroism on the big screen. He has received praise for his wide range of small-screen performances, notably his 2023 blockbuster drama Guru in which he plays a transgender character.

Ali thought on the distinctions between his parts in plays and films, pointing out that he likes characters with moral complexity, even if film roles sometimes call for a perfect hero. “When we watch a movie, we usually want a clean-cut hero who does everything perfectly. Heroes that are ethically ambiguous are rare. Parchi was a very gray figure, and I played more of an antihero in that part. I took pleasure in portraying him due to his complexity, dual nature as a criminal and his kindness.

According to Ali, “People want heroes who are honest most of the time.” They are usually presented as perfect, but I want to essay a hero with flaws in my future endeavors since that’s realistic. In addition to highlighting the need of relatability in characters, he expressed a want to see more genuine, imperfect heroes in the future. Characters in popular culture these days always have a clear moral compass. Though there isn’t much room for differentiation as an actor, you may still make them different.

On a lighter side, the Bebasi star expressed his astonishment and flattery at being compared to Ryan Gosling—a first—and praised Gosling for his ability to masterfully combine serious parts with comedy. This is the first time I’ve ever seen it. I’ve never heard anything like this before,” Ali cried out.

Being likened to him is a huge compliment because he is a well-known actor. For my part, I’ve never seen any similarities. He is one of my favorite performers since, in my opinion, Ryan Gosling not only plays serious roles with grace but also has amazing comic timing. One of my favorite movies is his flick Bad Guys. He said, “His performance in it is just amazing.”

Speaking about his personal life, Ali—who was born and raised in Islamabad but has lived in Karachi for the past six years—discussed how Karachi fast-paced, dynamic environment contrasts with Islamabad’s more relaxed, bureaucratic atmosphere. “Karachi is a hustling, bustling metropolitan city where the city keeps going, day and night,” he remarked. Day and night are very much felt in Islamabad.

The star acknowledged having a deep bond with Karachi, listing the city’s vibrant atmosphere and delicious food—particularly the renowned Burns Road cuisine—as highlights of her life there. “I adore Burns Road cuisine. As actors, we have to be mindful of our diets, so we can’t eat a lot, but you can go anywhere in Karachi and get delicious cuisine. Because of the intense competition in the city, service is highly valued here, and if you don’t provide it, your firm will fail right away, Ali thought to himself.

He looked ahead, appreciating the vast talent of leading actresses in Pakistani film such as Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed, and Sajal Ali, and expressing a want to collaborate with them on a variety of projects.
