Gaza War Talks Stall as Israeli Soldiers Killed in Combat

The Israeli army said that two of its soldiers died during a fight in northern Gaza. In the same incident, three more soldiers were killed and two were badly injured.

The injured soldiers were taken to a hospital for treatment. Their families have been informed.

Peace talks to end the war in Gaza, which has lasted nearly two years, started again on Sunday in Doha (the capital of Qatar). Representatives from Israel and Hamas (a Palestinian group) were in the same building but in different rooms.

A Palestinian official said Monday’s meeting ended with no progress.

More talks are expected soon. A special representative from the US, Steve Witkoff, is also joining to help push for a ceasefire.

According to two Palestinian sources, the US has suggested a 60-day pause in fighting. During this time, Hamas would release 10 hostages who are still alive (taken during the October 2023 attack on Israel), and also hand over the bodies of some people who died. In return, Israel would free some Palestinians it is holding in prison.

Hamas also wants Israel to pull its forces back, to promise not to restart fighting during the talks, and to allow the United Nations to take charge of aid delivery again.
