Global Flotilla Sets Sail to Break Gaza Blockade
A massive international effort is underway as the Global Sumud Flotilla, a fleet of more than 50 ships from six continents, sets out to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The flotilla is carrying activists, doctors, humanitarians, artists, clergy, and seafarers from at least 44 countries.
The first convoy left Spanish ports on August 31 and will be joined by a second wave departing Tunisia on September 4.
Organizers describe the initiative as non-governmental and non-partisan, coordinated by four groups: the Global Movement to Gaza, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and Sumud Nusantara. Their goal is to deliver humanitarian supplies and highlight what they call Israel’s “illegal siege” of Gaza.
The flotilla’s steering committee includes prominent figures such as Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, Palestinian organizer Saif Abukeshek, historian Kleoniki Alexopoulou, Pakistan’s former senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, alongside human rights defenders, scientists, and community leaders.
Hundreds are expected to take part in the voyage, with tens of thousands more around the world pledging support. For security reasons, details of the participating ships and ports are not being disclosed.
The journey will cover more than 3,000 kilometers of open sea and is expected to take seven to eight days. Organizers say the mission is firmly rooted in nonviolent action and a call for human dignity, declaring: “The siege and genocide must end.”
This is not the first attempt to break the blockade. Previous efforts, including the Handala and Madleen missions by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, ended with the detention and deportation of volunteers.
