M-5 Motorway Closed at Jalalpur Pirwala Amid Flood Erosion Risk

Floodwaters Force Closure of M-5 Motorway at Jalalpur Pirwala

Jalalpur Pirwala – Strong floodwaters have damaged a section of the M-5 Motorway, prompting authorities to close it to all traffic on Saturday.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) confirmed on Sunday that the motorway has been shut at Jalalpur Pirwala due to the risk of erosion and potential breach caused by the rising waters.

Director General of the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali Kathia, said teams from PDMA Punjab, NHA, and other relevant authorities are working to secure the motorway. “Stone pitching and sandbags are being used at critical points to prevent further erosion,” he added.

The DG also expressed optimism that floodwaters in the area would recede significantly over the next 24 hours, noting that water levels in Punjab’s rivers are dropping rapidly. Water flow at Panjnad has fallen to 392,000 cusecs, signaling improvement in the flood situation.

Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area until the motorway is reopened.
