Phillies Dominate Mets, Move Closer to NL Playoff Top Seed
Philadelphia — The Phillies delivered a powerful performance on Wednesday, sweeping the offensive board as they rolled past the New York Mets. Brandon Marsh led the charge with three hits and two RBIs, while Harrison Bader and J.T. Realmuto each added two hits and crossed the plate twice. Bryce Harper’s solo home run capped a big night for Philadelphia, who now aim for a four-game sweep on Thursday.
Aaron Sanchez (13-5) was solid on the mound for the Phillies, allowing just one run on four hits over six innings while striking out six and walking one.
Mets starter Clay Holmes (11-8) struggled, giving up four runs on six hits in just over four innings, with three walks and five strikeouts. Juan Soto shone for New York, finishing 3-for-5 with a homer and a double.
The victory pushed Philadelphia (86-60) 10 games ahead of the Mets in the NL East and brought them within 2½ games of the Milwaukee Brewers (89-58) for the top seed in the National League playoffs.
New York (76-70) remains only two games ahead of the San Francisco Giants (74-72) for the final wild-card spot. Early in the game, the Phillies’ first four hitters against Holmes all reached base, highlighted by Realmuto’s RBI single. With the bases still loaded and one out, Holmes hit Kepler with a pitch, giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead.
Soto responded for the Mets with a double in the fourth, scoring on Starling Marte’s single, but Philadelphia answered with two runs in the fifth. Marsh’s RBI double ended Holmes’ night, though Gregory Soto gave up another run-scoring single to Kepler.
Kepler’s two-run single in the sixth capped a four-run inning, extending Philadelphia’s lead to 8-1. Later in the game, Harper and Soto exchanged solo home runs, followed by Kepler hitting his 16th in the eighth. Harper reached 25 home runs for the seventh time in his career, while Soto hit his 39th, closing in on his career-high of 41 set last season.
