Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Set Sights on ODIs Despite T20I and Test Retirements
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two of India’s most celebrated cricketers, called time on their T20I careers last year after helping India lift the T20 World Cup 2024. The duo also retired from Test cricket in May 2025, just ahead of India’s five-match away Test series in England.
Despite stepping away from the longer formats, both players have reaffirmed their commitment to ODI cricket. However, concerns have surfaced among fans after former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan hinted that Kohli could retire from the 50-over format before the 2027 Cricket World Cup. By then, Kohli will be 39, while Rohit will turn 40.
Indian media reports have also suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might be looking to transition away from the senior duo due to their age and fitness considerations.
Speaking about Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan clarified that the Indian captain remains eager to continue his ODI career until at least the 2027 World Cup.
“I had a long chat with him about his plans. He’s very keen to continue playing. Every player wants that, especially someone like him who has done so well. He’s been a fantastic leader and one of our greatest in white-ball cricket,” Pathan told an Indian media outlet.
He added, “We all remember the heartbreak of the 2023 World Cup final, especially for him. Those emotions matter, but he still wants to carry on and make his mark going forward.”
It’s worth noting that both Kohli and Rohit have not featured for India since the Champions Trophy 2025 final in March, leaving fans eager to see when they will return to the ODI side.
