Earthquake tremors felt in KP’s Swat, nearby areas

Earthquake tremors were felt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat and nearby areas, reported Thursday.

The intensity of the earthquake was 5.6 on the Richter magnitude scale.

According to the News, no casualties have been reported so far.

The epicenter was reported below the Hindukush region of Afghanistan, according to the Met department.

Meanwhile, according to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake had a 4.9 magnitude.

Its epicenter was 27 km west of Ashkasham in Afghanistan with a depth of 22km.

It is pertinent to note here that President Arif Alvi, along with his family, is in Swat for a three-day visit.

Past Earthquake chaos

Last year, A mild earthquake jolted the Swat valley and its surrounding areas resulting in damages to window panes of houses and windscreens of several vehicles.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), tremors felt were 3.8 on Richter scale were felt in Swat and adjoining areas.

People of the areas where the earthquake was felt rushed out of homes and shops in panic reciting Kalma-e-Tayyeba.

Windows panes of houses and windscreens of several vehicles were damaged due to quake. However, no causalities were reported.

Epicenter of the earthquake was stated to border area of Pak-Afghanistan-Tajikistan, 76 kilometer inside earth crust.

On Jan 12,2020:

A powerful 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan’s Skardu and Gilgit-Baltistan as per initial reports available with the media.

Tremors were felt across the northern region with the depth of 15 kilometers and had an epicenter 58km east of Chilas, according to the center.

Tremors were also felt in Swat, Upper Dir, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and other areas.

On August 26, 2020:

There was another earthquake recorded.

The epicenter was reported at 5.1 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter at the Hindu Kush mountain range at a depth of 120 km.

Frightened by the quake, people came out of their houses, shops, and offices and started reciting the Quranic verses.

Tremors were also felt in different parts of Balochistan, including Quetta, a week prior to the earthquake.

According to the Seismological Center, the magnitude of the quake was 6.4 on the Richter scale while its epicenter was 60 km from Khuzdar.
