Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – The recent floods in Buner have taken a tragic toll, claiming 234 lives, the highest in the affected regions. The disaster also destroyed 162 homes, while 575 others suffered partial damage, leaving many families displaced.
Key infrastructure was heavily impacted, with 110 kilometers of roads, bridges, and essential facilities extensively damaged. The agricultural sector faced massive losses as 55,890 acres of farmland were submerged. Local commerce also suffered, with 825 shops destroyed and 3,638 livestock lost, delivering a severe blow to residents’ livelihoods.
The Public Health Department reported damages of Rs 194.8 million due to the collapse of water channels and related infrastructure. Education was not spared either, as 29 schools were affected, including one completely destroyed and several others partially damaged. Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department confirmed that 26,142 acres of crops were ruined, resulting in losses exceeding Rs 250 million. The Highway Authority added that four kilometers of roads were washed away, causing damage of over Rs 320 million.
Authorities warned that the road to recovery would require significant resources as the region grapples with the aftermath of the cloudburst and flooding.
Earlier, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif assured the nation that the federal government is committed to supporting flood-affected families and speeding up rehabilitation efforts, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s hardest-hit districts.
Chairing a federal cabinet meeting, the prime minister expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by heavy rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods in Swat, Swabi, Mansehra, Shangla, and surrounding areas. He noted that federal ministers, secretaries, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the armed forces are fully engaged in relief operations.
Recalling the 2022 floods that claimed around 100 lives, the prime minister highlighted that this year’s floods have been even deadlier, with over 700 fatalities nationwide, including more than 400 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also extended support to victims in Karachi, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need to prevent illegal constructions along waterways, warning that such practices worsen flood risks. He also raised concerns over large-scale deforestation in Galyat and other regions and pledged to convene a meeting soon to address environmental protection.
