Pakistan Emerges as the 9th-Biggest Potato Producer in the World

Pakistan rise to prominence as a potato producer highlights a radical change in the country’s agricultural environment, characterized by increased productivity and the smart use of arable land. Pakistan’s impressive rise in potato production—which increased by more than 35 percent in only three short years—makes it a competitive player in the world potato market.

The adoption of sophisticated farming techniques and the development of agricultural land devoted to potato growing are two major catalysts driving this exponential rise. These programs have worked together to increase yields, allowing Pakistan to produce more than eight million tons of potatoes a year. Interestingly, Punjab province becomes the core of this rapidly expanding potato industry, accounting for over 80% of the country’s total output. The province’s crucial position highlights both its agrarian skill and its potential as a leading hub for agricultural innovation and growth.

Beyond national boundaries, the growth of Pakistan’s potato industry resonates with global stakeholders and promotes strong commercial links. Pakistan’s potato story has become more centered around its exports, which are now going to a wide range of locations. Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, the Russian Federation, and Qatar stand out among them, highlighting Pakistan’s growing influence in international markets. President Maqsood Ahmad Jutt, representing the Potato Growers Association, hails this quick ascent as evidence of the agriculture sector’s tenacity and vibrancy in Pakistan. Jutt’s support not only acknowledges the industry’s accomplishments but also points to a bright future full of expansion and prosperity.

But even with this increase in output and export volume, difficulties are still ahead. Even if the amount of exports has been increasing, the declining value of potato exports between 2015 and 2019 raises important concerns for the long-term viability of the industry. Solving this puzzle requires a comprehensive strategy that includes value-added processing, strategic market diversification, and improved quality control procedures. Strengthening its export network and reducing internal weaknesses would enable Pakistan to nimbly negotiate the changing dynamics of the world potato market, solidifying its place as a major force in the field of agricultural trade.
