Ceasefire Talks Resume Ahead of Netanyahu’s US Visit
Ceasefire talks started again on Sunday, just before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s third visit to the White House since U.S. President Donald Trump came back to power about six months ago.
Sources said that after the first round of indirect talks in Doha, the Israeli team did not have enough authority to make a deal with Hamas. They said the team didn’t have real decision-making power.
Before leaving for Washington, Netanyahu said that the Israeli team has clear orders to reach a ceasefire deal, but only under conditions that Israel agrees with.

On Saturday night, many people gathered at a square in Tel Aviv near the defense ministry. They were demanding a ceasefire and the return of about 50 hostages still held in Gaza. The protesters waved Israeli flags, shouted slogans, and held posters with pictures of the hostages.
The current conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel. About 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken as hostages, according to Israeli reports.
Israel believes around 20 of the remaining hostages are still alive. Many hostages have been freed through talks, and a few were rescued by the Israeli army.
Gaza’s health ministry says more than 57,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel’s military attacks. The fighting has also caused severe hunger, forced many people to leave their homes, and destroyed large parts of Gaza.
