Djokovic Cruises into US Open Quarterfinals with Straight-Sets Win Over Struff
Flushing Meadows – Novak Djokovic made light work of world number 144 Jan-Lennard Struff, cruising to a 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory to secure a spot in the US Open quarterfinals. The 38-year-old Serbian will face Taylor Fritz, the last American standing in the men’s draw and the 2024 runner-up.
“What gives me a lot of encouragement right now is the way I played tonight,” Djokovic said. “Best performance of the tournament so far. Hopefully I can keep that going.”
Djokovic was largely in control throughout the match, breaking the 35-year-old Struff five times. However, the match wasn’t without its challenges for the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic received treatment for his neck and right shoulder, often stretching between points, and also had a forearm massage. Despite this, he appeared unbothered while the ball was in play.
The Serbian star has battled a sore back in the third round and blisters in his opening match, but has now reached his 64th Grand Slam quarterfinal. “It definitely helps if you serve well. I think I had a great serving performance last round and also tonight,” Djokovic said. “That helps make it easier on the court.”
This marks Djokovic’s 14th appearance in the last eight at Flushing Meadows. His win over Struff extends his perfect record against the German to 8-0. Next up is Taylor Fritz, another player Djokovic has dominated, holding a 10-0 record in their past encounters, including a straight-sets victory in the US Open quarterfinals two years ago.
“Taylor definitely has the potential to be a Grand Slam winner,” Djokovic said. “He was playing finals here last year, so there’s no reason not to believe he can make it. Hopefully not this year, but any other year is fine.”
