Imran raised Rs500m in fundraising telethon
Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held a global telethon donation on (Monday) 29 August at 9:30 pm for Pakistan flood victims.
On Saturday 27 August, Imran Khan, while addressing a public gathering in Jhelum, said he would help the flood-hit people but would not stop his campaign for real freedom.
He also announced the establishment of a relief fund to collect donations, adding that Sania Nishtar, a party leader who led the Ehsaas social welfare programme during Covid-19, would head the effort.
“Overseas Pakistanis have always stepped up, may it be the floods of 2010 or the Kashmir earthquake in 2005,” Imran Khan said while calling for the country’s vibrant diaspora to help their nation.
The PTI supremo urged Pakistanis to attend the fundraising telethon for flood victims in a video on his Facebook page. Khan claimed that Pakistan has been experiencing the worst flooding in its history and that it is time to help fellow citizens.
He urged citizens and overseas Pakistanis to participate in the telethon.
Actor Humayun Saeed has tweeted a poster featuring details of Khan’s telethon for flood relief and asserted that it is not the right time for political discourse.

Speaking during Live Telethon which was telecast by a number of TV channels, the PTI chief said entire Pakistan had been affected by the floods generated by back-to-back monsoon rains. He said more than 1,000 people have died due to devastating floods and the damages are expected to cross Rs1,000 billion.

He said that the country would have to construct more dams to save people from such devastation in future. “The sole solution to prevent the catastrophes caused by flood is to construct dams.”
The PTI chairman said that he is struggling for real independence besides assisting the flood victims across the country. During the telethon, several celebrities joined Imran Khan. Chief Minister of Punjab Pervaiz Elahi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan and the former premier’s ex-assistant on social protection Sania Nishtar also featured in the telethon. British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan also joined the telethon and announced Rs5 million for flood victims. Prime Minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan, who attended PTI’s live telethon transmission, announced Rs30 million for flood affectees. Senior journalist Sabir Shakir also announced Rs500,000 donations for the flood-affected people.
According to PTI’s official Twitter, the former prime minister collected Rs500 million within 30 minutes after the telethon began. The PTI also shared details of the two bank accounts in which donations could be given. Talking to callers, Imran said that the money collected would be donated to all the provinces across the country and its disbursement would be managed by former chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Dr Sania Nishtar.
“On the call of the Chairman @ImranKhanPTI, in just a few hours, the great nation of Pakistan allocated more than 500 crore rupees for the relief of the flood victims. This is the passion of this nation and faith in the honesty and trustworthiness of Imran Khan,” Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a close Khan aide and former foreign minister in his cabinet, said on Twitter.

The party’s official political handle also announced that Rs5 billion had been pledged by Khan supporters “in three hours to help flood victims.”

UK businessman donates £100000 for Imran Khan’s floods appeal

It said the PTI received funds from different people and companies abroad, including business tycoon Arif Naqvi, owner of a Dubai-based equity group, who is among several people charged by US prosecutors with being part of an international scheme to defraud investors, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Some of the money received by the PTI was allegedly raised as charity to support a cancer hospital built by Khan.
