Gabbard Sends DOJ Criminal Referrals, Accuses Obama Team of ‘Treasonous Conspiracy’
WASHINGTON — Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has filed criminal referrals with the U.S. Department of Justice, citing allegations that former President Barack Obama and top officials in his administration engaged in a “treasonous conspiracy” related to Russian election interference.
The referrals follow the release of a controversial report on Friday, which Gabbard claims proves that Obama-era officials fabricated intelligence to justify a long-running campaign aimed at undermining Donald Trump’s presidency. She described the effort as a “years-long coup.”
The explosive allegations have been widely criticized, as they contradict the findings of multiple official investigations conducted between 2019 and 2023. These included criminal, counterintelligence, and watchdog probes — all of which concluded that Russia did interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election in support of Trump.
Asked about the referrals during a White House press briefing alongside Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Trump reiterated his belief that former President Obama was behind the alleged conspiracy.
“Based on what I read — and I read pretty much what you read — it would be President Obama. He started it,” Trump said. The former president also pointed fingers at then-Vice President Joe Biden, former FBI Director James Comey, ex-DNI Director James Clapper, and former CIA Director John Brennan, labeling Obama as the “leader of the gang.”
Trump, who has long described the Russia investigations as a “hoax,” was recently criticized for sharing an AI-generated video depicting Obama being arrested.
Critics swiftly dismissed Gabbard’s claims and Trump’s remarks as efforts to distract from growing public pressure on the administration over its lack of transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case. Obama’s office responded forcefully, calling the accusations “ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”
“Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,” Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush said.
A 2020 bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report, led by then-chairman Marco Rubio — now Secretary of State — found that Trump’s campaign actively sought to benefit from the release of stolen Democratic emails by Russian intelligence. The report described the actions of Trump and his associates as part of one of the most serious counterintelligence threats in U.S. history.
The political fallout from Gabbard’s criminal referrals continues to grow, sparking renewed debate over the 2016 election, the role of foreign interference, and the boundaries of presidential accountability.
