15 Killed in Israeli Strikes on Gaza Hospital, Including Four Journalists

Khan Yunis, Gaza – At least 15 people, including four journalists and a civil defence worker, were killed after Israeli strikes hit Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, according to Palestinian civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate confirmed that the reporters were “martyred in the line of journalistic duty” and named them as photojournalists Hossam Al-Masri, Mohammad Salama, Mariam Dagga, and journalist Moaz Abu Taha. Al Jazeera confirmed that its photojournalist Mohammad Salama was killed in the attack. The others worked with various Palestinian and international media outlets.

AFP reports that Mariam Dagga, a freelancer, was not on assignment for the news agency when she was killed. Reuters said one of the journalists killed and one injured was contracted by the agency.

Bassal said the attack began with an Israeli explosive drone hitting a hospital building, followed by an airstrike as the wounded were being evacuated.

Footage from the scene showed thick smoke, debris scattered outside the hospital, and people rushing to help victims. Some carried bloodied bodies and severed body parts inside the medical complex. Witnesses described a harrowing scene, including a body dangling from the top floor and a medical worker with severe injuries being carried on a stretcher.

Media organizations note that about 200 journalists have been killed over nearly two years of fighting between Israel and Hamas. Earlier this month, four Al Jazeera staff and two freelancers were killed in an airstrike near Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, drawing widespread condemnation.

The Committee to Protect Journalists called the attacks “war crimes,” emphasizing that journalists are civilians who must never be targeted.

The conflict has taken a devastating toll on Gaza’s civilian population. According to Gaza’s health ministry, which the United Nations considers reliable, at least 62,686 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive, the majority of them civilians.
