Bautista Nears Villain Role in Highlander Reboot
Dave Bautista Close to Landing Villain Role in ‘Highlander’ Reboot
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dave Bautista is nearing the end of talks with Amazon MGM to play the villain in the upcoming reboot of the cult classic Highlander.
The new film, directed by Chad Stahelski, is expected to begin shooting later this year, with locations planned in the UK and Hong Kong.
Bautista is set to take on the role of The Kurgan, the immortal barbarian originally portrayed by Clancy Brown in the 1986 film. This isn’t Bautista’s first time linked to the character—he previously tried to play The Kurgan in an earlier Highlander project that never got off the ground.
Back in 2015, a Highlander movie was in development under director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, but the project quietly stalled for unknown reasons.
Fans have been buzzing since Henry Cavill was officially cast as the lead Immortal in the 2021 reboot announcement. Recently, fan-made trailers imagining Cavill and Bautista as rival immortal warriors caught the attention of both the actors and the filmmakers, helping push Bautista closer to the villain role.
If the deal goes through, Bautista will be joining a star-studded cast that includes Cavill, Russell Crowe, and Marisa Abela.
For those unfamiliar, the original Highlander movie, released in 1986, follows an immortal Scottish swordsman battling the last of his kind. Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the film starred Christopher Lambert as the lead, with Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart in supporting roles.
