ICC Flags Concerns Over Subrayen’s Bowling Action After ODI Debut
CAIRNS — South African off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action during his One Day International (ODI) debut against Australia on Tuesday.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that match officials raised concerns after Subrayen bowled 10 overs, finishing with figures of 1-46 in South Africa’s 98-run victory.
Under ICC rules, the 31-year-old must undergo an independent assessment of his action at an accredited testing facility within 14 days. He will be allowed to continue bowling until the results of that assessment are released. Current regulations permit bowlers a maximum elbow extension of 15 degrees when delivering the ball.
This is not the first time Subrayen’s action has come under scrutiny. He was suspended from bowling in domestic cricket in late 2015 after failing an assessment, but returned a few months later following clearance. A similar suspension occurred in 2012, with remedial work helping him resume bowling in early 2013.
Subrayen, who made his Test debut last month against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, impressed with four wickets in the first innings. Cricket South Africa has yet to comment on the ICC’s latest report.
