India Water Release Sparks Flood Alert in Punjab
India Releases Water into Sutlej and Ravi Rivers, Flood Alert Issued in Punjab
LAHORE – India released additional water from the Madhopur Dam late last night, raising water levels in the Sutlej and Ravi rivers, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed on Monday.
According to NDMA, the situation is being closely monitored as heavy rainfall has been forecast in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Floodwaters released into the Ravi have already entered Pakistan, causing a sudden surge at the Jassar point in Narowal. Rescue teams managed to save 56 people trapped in fields near the river. A medium-level flood is currently flowing through Jassar and is expected to reach Shahdara later today.
Meanwhile, the Sutlej River is experiencing severe flooding. At Ganda Singh Wala, the river has reached extremely high levels, with a recorded flow of 195,000 cusecs. Residential areas and vast stretches of farmland in Uch Sharif, Arifwala, and Pakpattan are submerged.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to ensure the safe evacuation of residents from flood-hit areas. The Flood Forecasting Division has warned that water levels in both the Ravi and Sutlej continue to rise, especially in Lahore.
Authorities have also sounded an alert for the Chenab River, amid reports that India may release water there as well. In Phalia, Rescue 1122 teams remain on standby, with 22 villages in Tehsil Phalia identified as vulnerable. Residents in at-risk areas have been urged to move to safer locations.
