Israel Hits Houthi Sites in Yemen Over Gaza Tensions
Israel Strikes Houthi Targets in Yemen Amid Ongoing Gaza Conflict Spillover
SANA’A – Residents reported to Reuters that airstrikes hit areas near Yemen’s presidential complex and a building in southern Sanaa on Thursday.
According to Yemeni military sources, the presidential complex contained an operations room and a missile storage facility used by Iran-aligned Houthi militants. Israel confirmed carrying out a single attack, targeting sites where senior Houthi officials were reportedly gathered to watch a televised speech by leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi.
However, a Houthi Ministry of Defense source denied that any leaders were targeted, as reported by the Houthi-run news agency.
“Whoever raises a hand against Israel – his hand will be cut off,” Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement on Thursday.
The strikes come after Israel said on Sunday that it had retaliated for Houthi missile launches toward Israeli territory. The exchanges are the latest in over a year of attacks and counterattacks between Israel and the Houthis in Yemen, reflecting the wider regional tensions stemming from the war in Gaza.
Senior Houthi official Nasruldeen Amer reiterated on Thursday that the Houthis, who control much of Yemen’s population, would continue supporting Palestinians in Gaza.
The Iran-aligned Houthis have previously targeted vessels in the Red Sea, describing the attacks as acts of solidarity with Gaza. They have also fired missiles toward Israel, most of which were intercepted. Israel, in turn, has carried out strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, including the strategically important port of Hodeidah.
