Kim Jong Un Recalls ‘Fond Memories’ of Trump, Rejects Nuclear Talks
PYONGYANG – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said he still remembers former U.S. President Donald Trump fondly, while firmly rejecting any chance of giving up his country’s nuclear weapons.
Speaking at the Supreme People’s Assembly on Sunday, Kim said North Korea’s survival depends on maintaining its nuclear arsenal, which he described as a shield against threats from the United States and South Korea. He accused Washington and Seoul of carrying out military drills that he claimed were “exercises for nuclear war.”
Kim dismissed recent peace overtures from both countries, calling them insincere. “The world already knows what happens when a country gives up its nuclear weapons,” he said. “We will never give up our nuclear weapons.”
The North Korean leader stressed that sanctions have only strengthened his country’s resolve. “There will never be, and will never be for eternity, any negotiations with enemies obsessed with lifting sanctions,” he declared.
North Korea has long been under strict United Nations sanctions aimed at curbing its nuclear ambitions. Despite this, the country continues to expand its weapons program, with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung warning that Pyongyang is adding 15 to 20 nuclear warheads every year.
Lee, who took office in June, told Reuters that sanctions have failed to deter the North and instead worsened the problem. He has pushed for dialogue with Pyongyang, suggesting a phased approach to dismantling its nuclear programme, while urging Trump to play a role in restarting talks.
But with Kim’s latest remarks, the prospect of renewed negotiations appears dim.
