LHC Imposes Midnight Closure on Lahore Restaurants Over Smog
LHC Orders Citywide Restaurant Closures by Midnight Amid Smog Concerns
Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued strict directives on Thursday to tackle the worsening environmental crisis in the city, particularly smog and pollution.
In a hearing on environmental petitions, the court ordered all restaurants across Lahore to close by midnight sharp. Justice Karim warned that any violation of the time restriction would result in legal action.
Highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis, the court stressed that environmental issues, including climate change, are non-negotiable and must be prioritized by all stakeholders.
Addressing ongoing infrastructure projects, the court confirmed that the Yellow Line development is under independent supervision to ensure environmental compliance.
Additionally, the court reaffirmed the status of Lahore’s historic Canal as a protected heritage site. Referring to earlier Supreme Court rulings, it reiterated that no trees along the canal may be cut without prior approval from the court.
In a related matter, the court had earlier, on February 28, praised the traffic wardens for effective traffic management and directed authorities to expedite the process of granting health allowances. The judge also ordered the prompt establishment of a proper service structure for wardens.
The hearing was adjourned until July 28.
